Welcome to Chemistry 4 Homeschool!
Complete instructions and videos for everything you need to do
will be found below.
1. We are going to begin with an
introductory lab. (Click here to download the lab and then
complete it.)
If you have a printer I recommend printing this lab
sheet. If you don't have a printer you can record your answers
on a separate sheet of paper and save it for later in the unit.
2. After the lab, watch the short Unit 1 Introduction video below:
1. View the ChemQuest informational
video below.
2. Read objective #1 on the
Learning objectives sheet on page 5 of your book. This learning
objective tells you what you should be learning today. Below
each objective you will find "I can" statements. When you can do
all of those "I can" statements, then you know you've
accomplished your learning goal for the day.
3. Complete ChemQuest #1: Composition of Air. See pages 6-9 in
your book.
1. Check your answers to
yesterday's assignment using the answer key. (Click here.) It is
strongly recommended that you put forth best effort on
every assignment before consulting the answer
keys. It is by doing the assignments and struggling with them
first that you will learn the material. If you take a
premature shortcut to the answer keys you will find future
concepts in the course too difficult or impossible because
you took shortcuts. Fair warning! Of course, if you
get completely stuck during an assignment and can't proceed then
you should look ahead to the next day where you will find the
answer key and the video. Only consult future answer keys and
videos AFTER you struggle to figure out the questions on your
own!
2. View the video for ChemQuest #1 below. Note: if your
answers were the same as the answer key and you feel very
confident of your answers, you may skip portions of the video or
watch the video at a higher speed. Note, however, that if you
skip the video you might miss some expanded explanations for
some questions (see question 5 in this video for an example).
Therefore, it is highly recommended that you watch every video.
3. Read objective #2 on the
Learning objectives sheet. Refer to page 5 in your book. This
learning objective tells you what you should be learning today.
4. Complete ChemQuest #2: Changes and Matter on pages 10-13 in
your book.
1. Check your answers to
yesterday's assignment using the answer key. (Click here.)
2. View the video for ChemQuest #2 below:
3. Watch this YouTube video that demonstrates a great chemical
change. Sodium metal and chlorine gas react to form table salt:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ji_25I_q4LQ
4. Read objectives #3 and #4 on the Learning objectives sheet.
Refer to page 5 of your book. These learning objectives are what
you should be learning today.
5. Complete ChemQuest #3: Experiments With Water found on pages
14-17 of your book.
1. Check your answers to
yesterday's assignment using the answer key. (Click here.)
2. View the video for ChemQuest #3 below:
3. Re-read objectives #1-4 on the
Learning objectives sheet. See page 5 of your book. Today is a
day to reinforce objectives #1-4. After today you should be able
to do the "I can" statements for each objective. Make sure you
can!
4. Complete Skill Practices 1-3. (See pages 18-20 in your book.)
The Skill Practice assignments reinforce each previous ChemQuest
assignment. During ChemQuests you will learn new material and
during Skill Practice assignments you will review and strengthen
your understanding. So, for example, if you get stuck on Skill
Practice 1, you can refer back to ChemQuest 1 for some help.

can record your answers on a separate paper. Answer keys to the
tests were also emailed.
In Unit 1 you learned about the
existence of tiny "building blocks." You learned that water and
air are not "elements" even though they were thought of as
elements for centuries. In this unit you will learn about the
historical development of the atomic theory and our current
understanding about these building blocks of matter.
1. This is one of the very rare
days where you will need to take notes. Before you begin, please
read learning objective #1. If you purchased a hard copy of the
book, the learning objectives can be found at the beginning of
Unit 2, on page 49. Remember, when you can do all of those "I can"
statements, then you know you've accomplished your learning
goal for the day.
2. After reading today's learning objective, please open your
book to the guided notes worksheet on page 50.
3. Watch the following video and fill in the blanks in the
guided notes worksheet...

and make sure you have a solid understanding of the "I can"
statements.
4. Take the Unit 2 Test over the Atomic Theory.
Now that you know the basics of the
atomic theory, we are now going to look at the part of the atom
that is most important for understanding chemical reactions: the
electron. The periodic table--and even the shape of the periodic
table--gives us a lot of insight about the electrons. Once you
understand the electrons, you will be able to comprehend why
atoms bond and react the way they do.
1. Begin Unit 3 by watching the introductory video below:
2. Before you begin today's
assignments, please read learning objective #1 found on page 73
of your book. Remember, when you can do all of those "I can"
statements, then you know you've accomplished the learning
goal. It will take us several days to finish the first
learning objective, so you won't be able to do all of the "I
can" statements after today.

In the last unit, you learned about
the electrons in atoms. You discovered that atoms become ions by
gaining or losing electrons. If an atom loses an electron it
becomes a positive ion. If an atom gains an electron it becomes
a negative ion. Now we will begin learning about chemical
bonding. The first type of bonding involves the attraction
between oppositely charged ions. For example, a positive ion
will attract to a negative ion and form what is called an ionic
bond. Now let's explore how atoms form bonds.
